counting blessings and God’s goodness…

Tonight in youth group I spoke to the students about the importance of remembering all that God has done for us and how that causes our faith to grow. For the passage, i taught from Joshua about when the Israelites crossed the Jordan to enter the promised land and get ready to take Jericho. I spoke to the students about how Joshua had two memorials built to help remind the people of how God had provided for them and encourage them that God would continue to be there.

While I am not saying we need to go out and build shrines or stone memorial to mark all the great things that God has done for us, i take great comfort in looking back and counting all the ways God has met needs in my life over the years. Whether those needs be financial, friendship, health, relationship, or various other issues He’s always been there for me and my family. And as I get older and more obstacles, challenges, and uncertainty comes my way I can take comfort that my God who has already done so much has promised He will never leave me nor forsake me!

While this may be an encouraging thought that you have already been applying to your life as I have mine, I am deeply concerned for my students both at church and here in Lee County. Too often i see them have a circumstantial faith. In the past when God has been there for them and they have mountain top experiences they get all excited and God is awesome. Yet, when something new and scary comes their way, rather than looking back and taking heart in God’s previous previsions for their lives they get upset that God would allow them to go through a hard time. And from that disappointment with God doubts about his goodness, faithfulness, and even existence arise. I pray that this would not be the case. i pray that they would use previous times of God’s goodness and faithfulness and a boost and encouragement in new hard times, realizing He’s always been there for them and nothing about that has changed. I pray that they would look back at the stone memorials in their lives and praise God and have a true Faith and relationship with Him that is never ever based on circumstances!
