For the past few weeks I have been reading posts on Facebook and twitter that have really disappointed and saddened me. Countless females sharing about how excited they are to be reading a book called “Fifty Shades of Grey” or excited to be going to see a movie called “Magic Mike,” or worse yet both.
Growing up in Sunday School classes we always sang a little song called, “Oh Be Careful Little Eyes.” The premise of the song is that we need to be careful of what we see, hear, and say because “The Father up above is looking down in love.” Meaning God is watching us and out of love for the love He has shown us we need to be careful of what is going into our minds and out of our mouths. Proverbs 31:30 says, “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” ESV Fearing God, and/or showing Him respect is a characteristic of a virtuous woman and should be of every human. Yet how do we fear and respect a God when we are putting filth into our minds.
First of all, let me say I have not seen or read either this film or the book. However from previews on television, reviews from respected Christian movie and book review sights, or even Wikipedia it’s clear that both should be avoided. “Fifty Shades of Grey” is classified as erotic fiction. This means its designed to arouse the reader and thus is a form of porn. “Magic Mike” is about male strippers and from the reviews has plenty of nudity, tons of sexual situations and sex….so once again it’s porn too. Over and over the posts that people I would normally respect have read about how the movie or the book excited or got them all hot and bothered. This leaves no doubt that this is porn, it’s sin, and it’s less than God’s best for us. It’s not something to be posting and bragging about.
As Christian guys we are taught that premarital sex and pornography are sins that cause us to settle for less than God’s best which is sex inside marriage where God intended it. So, why do so many women lately think that these forms of porn are any different. They are not!!!
Ladies, I urge you, step up and be a virtuous Proverbs 31 woman. A woman that fears and respects the Lord. A woman that is not going to put filth into her mind. A woman that is not going to give into temporary excitement and settle for less than God’s best! Be an example for Christ!
