On Sunday it was time for some nostalgia and a trip down memory lane in my household. My wife Erin and I have been working on moving around our guest bedroom to make it into an office space for us to work out of and have a place to store some of our books. In the process of going through our books we came across my old Disney Record/Books.
These were books from the early 80’s and late 70’s where you would play a record and when the chimes sounded turn the page as you followed along in the books. The books were generally old Disney classics like Robin Hood, Winnie The Pooh, Mary Poppins, Cinderella, and much more. As a child I can remember hours spent listening to these records on my old Fisher Price record player. I was always afraid to play the Snow White and Wizard of Oz record/books when I was by myself because the witches scared me so bad! These record/books definitely helped spark my love of reading and Disney growing up.
After finding these treasures, Erin put me on the hunt to find my Fisher Price record player. After much digging and going through storage I finally found it, complete with the shiny skull stickers I had added as a child. With a short prayer I plugged it in and after 20 years or more of no use, it fired up just like it was 1985!
Upon hear the noise of the record player Maeven came running into the office to see what was going on. It wasn’t long before Judah joined us and we began listening to records and turning the pages in our books every time we heard that magical chime noise. Of course for Maeven, we had to start with her favorite “Cindawella!” Judah really enjoyed listening to “Zippity Doo Dah” on the “Brer’ Rabbit and the Tar Baby” record. I know it made me a little sappy and sentimental, but I really enjoyed listening to those old records and introducing my kids to some Disney classics this afternoon. It was a very special time and if I can keep the kids from being to exuberant with the records and record player, hopefully we will have many more hours of enjoying them together!
