getting people in on a sunny day…

Today i am here working at the Lee County Recreational Center and waiting for people to come in and bowl and take advantage of all the fun activities our facility has to offer.  So far to be honest, it’s been pretty lonely.  The sun is out and shining brightly which means lots of people are out and about doing all kinds of fun activities outdoors.

So how do we draw people inside?  This is something that is on my mind today as I am pondering life’s many mysteries.  As we head into summer I know there are going to be many more beautiful summer days and we can’t afford to have an empty Rec Center.  Some of the things we have planned to deal with this issue are outdoor movie night’s, summer bowling leagues, Vacation Bible School, and various meal deals.  So, I guess the purpose of this post is what ideas do you have that we could do to compete with the beautiful weather?  Other than pray for rain that is!

Bowling for Churches…

Bowling high qualityWhen KMM opened up the Lee County Recreational Center’s Bowling Center in November of 2007, we made the decision to close on Wednesday Nights and Sundays so that we would not be competing with local churches.  There are enough things going on that pull at our youth and adults to keep them from attending church.  At the same time, one of our goals has always been to be a tool for the local church to use bring people in to hear about Jesus.  So, when approached by churches we make exceptions to our closed rule and open up for various outreaches that a church wants to do.

Yesterday, Erin and I were blessed to open up on a normally closed for our church’s youth group to come out for a monthly youth activity.  A whole van load of kids from Emmanuel Baptist Church in Powell County came out and joined us for a fun afternoon of cosmic bowling to the latest contemporary Christian music and Christmas music, and eating lots of pizza.  We had a great time being able to let the kids enjoy the bowling and fellowshipping with the other youth leaders who brought the kids.  As I made lunch for everyone and watched the joy that this outing was bringing to our students, I was reminded of how thankful I am to be part of a ministry that uses sports and recreation as a tool to bring others to Christ.  And to be able to be an extension for our local churches to use is just another huge blessing.

Please keep the ministries of the Lee County Recreational Center in your prayers.  Pray that more churches in our area will take advantage of our facility for their outreaches.  Most importantly, keep praying that whether through Church outreaches or through our own Rec Center Outreaches, that we will be able to share Jesus with many more people!

have you had your check up???

Health Screening Flyer 2014One of the things that I love about working at the Rec Center ministry where I am do, is that we are able to reach two vital needs people have.  We are able to reach their physical needs and their spiritual needs.  Through reaching the physical need with our fitness center, health screenings, Biggest Loser contest, and various other activities we try to get our community concerned with and looking to take care of themselves physically.  As they do so we want to build relationships with them in order to share the love of Christ and connect them with local churches and Bible studies, and in some cases even Christian counseling.  In 1 Corinthians we read of how the Apostle Paul says that he became all thing or became a servant to all in order to see more people saved.  Here we see a need of how people are really struggling in our area physically and want to become a place and an outreach to help them take control of their lives physically in order to help reach them wherever they are spiritually.

Currently, we are having our annual Biggest Loser contest at the Rec Center to help challenge and help our community meet their weight loss goals.  We presently have over 20 people in the contest and many are seeing results.  Later this month we are having a free health screening in partnership with our local hospital and health department.  Anyone in the community can come in and get screened for various issues like blood pressure, lipid panels and much more for FREE!  It’s a great chance for people who don’t want to spend the money for these tests to make sure they are doing ok physically. And most importantly it’s another chance for us to get people in the door to build relationships that lead to Jesus.

Please keep myself, our staff, and all the ministries of the Lee County Recreational Center (www.leecountyreccenter.com) in your prayers.  We want to serve our community and be a shining light for Christ in our community.

bowling for the first time…

Kids bowling for the first time...

Kids bowling for the first time…

When the Rec Center was just an idea a few years back, one of the things we really wanted to do was provide a fun place with thing to do that you just couldn’t do anywhere else around us. At that time the nearest bowling alley was around an hour away, or maybe a little less depending on how you drive. Many people in our community had either rarely been bowling or never at all. The church I attended at that time took their students bowling once a year and that was really the only time I ever bowled. So, over the past few years as the Rec Center has been open with our bowling lanes one of the things I have really enjoyed is getting to see kids’ faces light up as they roll that bowling ball for the first time.

This morning I was surprised with bowling group from a small nearby Christian school. Most if not all of the students had never bowled before. I couldn’t help but smile as I saw them get excited to just knock one pin down, and even more excited if someone got a strike. Unlike some of the competitive leagues they were cheering each other on and chanting each other’s names in encouragement. It was a truly precious sight.

Our main goal here at the Rec Center is to use bowling and other recreation as a tool to bring in people for various outreaches and to build relationships to be able to share the Gospel. It’s been great to have the opportunity to do that and to see the joy in our kids faces. God has truly blessed us!

figuring out social media for the Rec Center…

Last Monday I had the opportunity to attend another class on using social media websites to promote your business, ministry, or organization.  Last year I also had the opportunity to attend some other classes with my Mom where we learned about ways to promote both the camp and the Rec Center.  After last year’s classes, I was able to get the Lee County Recreational Center, on both Twitter, Yelp, and Urban Spoon.   While a lot of our local patrons don’t use these sites we felt like they might attract outside the area buisness.

This year the class that I attended was much the same.   However, I found out about a sight called tripadvisor.com that evidently a lot of people are using to plan get aways in our area.  So, I of course made sure to get  us up on this new website asap so that we can have even more online visibility.  The big thing that was pushed in the class that I went to was the importance of getting reviews from customers.  The more reviews and the better the reviews the more various search engines will pick up on you organization/ministry/business, and help promote it.   That is actually the point of the blog that I am writing here today.  We need your help.   If you have visited us at the Lee County Recreational Center please go on sites like Yelp, UrbanSpoon, Google, and TripAdvisor and write a quick review.   During this slow summer season we really need your reviews to help draw out of town tourists to our facility.   So please take a few minutes of your time and give us a good review!!!

golf scramble recap…

Our annual Rec Center Golf Scramble is now done and in the books for another year.  God truly blessed the even this year as we had beautiful weather and a great turn out.   Over all there were 32 golfers who participated in the tournament.  This was another way that God blessed as we had only 16 golf carts allowing enough carts for each of our golfers to use!   Our golfers and sponsors were very generous this year and we were able to raise some much needed funds for the Rec Center.   To all of you who prayed for this even and for us as we pulled everything together I thank you very much.  A huge thanks to all those who sponsored the event, golfed, and those who just enjoy the dinner with us.   It was a great day!

golf scramble preparations and sponsorships….

This afternoon I am making my foray out into Lee County to start trying to get local people and businesses to sponsor holes at our annual Golf Scramble on June 16th.  This is the largest fundraiser we do each year at the Rec Center and it greatly helps us as we head into the slower summer months at the Rec.   If you would like to help sponsor a hole for your business at the Rec Center Golf Scramble it it only costs $25 a hole.   With your sponsorship we advertise your business both at the hole you are sponsoring and also at the club house.   We also put all our sponsors in the local newspaper.   The scramble will be on June 16th at the Beattyville Country Club and we would love to have your support as a sponsor or a golfer!  If you can’t do either we will also be serving lunch from noon till 2 pm on a donation basis.   Hope to see you there!!!
